ABOUT ORTUS ENERGY

ORTUS ENERGY IRELAND

The renewable energy market in Ireland has experienced significant growth and evolution in recent years, driven by ambitious government targets, technological advancements, and increasing environmental awareness. Ireland has abundant renewable energy resources, particularly wind and ocean energy, making it well- positioned to capitalize on clean energy opportunities. Wind power has been a dominant force in Ireland's renewable energy landscape, with the country consistently ranking among the top performers in wind energy capacity per capita globally. The development of onshore and offshore wind farms has been pivotal in meeting renewable energy targets and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Proud to be part of part of

Recently, Ireland has been increasingly diversifying its renewable energy portfolio, with growing investments in solar photovoltaic (PV), biomass, and hydroelectricity projects. The implementation of supportive policies, incentives, and initiatives by the government has played a crucial role in fostering the growth of the renewable energy market, attracting investment, and spurring innovation in the sector.

As of January 2022, here are some key renewable energy statistics for Ireland:

  1. Wind power is the leading source of renewable energy in Ireland, with substantial onshore and offshore wind capacity. In 2020, wind energy accounted for approximately 37% of Ireland’s electricity consumption, making it the largest contributor to renewable electricity generation in the country.
  2. Solar energy capacity in Ireland has been growing steadily, albeit from a relatively low base. As of 2020, solar photovoltaic (PV) installations contributed around 4% of Ireland’s total renewable electricity generation.

  3. Biomass energy plays a significant role in Ireland’s renewable energy mix, primarily in the form of biomass combustion for heat and electricity generation. Biomass accounted for approximately 11% of Ireland’s renewable energy consumption in 2020.

  4. Ireland’s hydroelectric capacity is relatively modest compared to other renewable sources. In 2020, hydroelectric power contributed around 3% of Ireland’s total renewable electricity generation.

  5. Renewable Energy Targets: Ireland has committed to ambitious renewable energy targets, aiming to generate 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030. Additionally, the country has a target to achieve 16% of its overall energy consumption from renewables by 2020, which was surpassed.

There is a huge opportunity for solar in Ireland, and interest in the sector continues to grow driven by declining costs of solar technology and increasing awareness of the need for diverse renewable energy sources.

Photovoltaic (PV) power purchase agreements (PPAs) present a significant opportunity in Ireland’s renewable energy sector, leveraging the country’s increasing interest in solar energy and its commitment to transitioning towards a low-carbon economy. With improving technology and declining costs, solar PV projects have become increasingly competitive in the Irish energy market. PPAs offer an attractive avenue for investors and corporations to participate in the renewable energy transition while hedging against rising energy costs and demonstrating environmental stewardship.

As Ireland continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, PV PPAs are poised to play a significant role in driving further growth in solar energy adoption and contributing to Ireland’s renewable energy targets.

John Liston

Commercial Director

John is an experienced renewable energy professional with 8 years experience in the Irish renewable energy market. John has worked in areas such as industrial biomass, wind and most recently working in solar PV.

Over the last 4 years John has worked with Enerpower helping them become one of Ireland and the UK’s largest solar PV providers. In his role as Senior Sales Manager UK and Ireland John worked with clients such as Sysco, Pfizer, Alexion Astrazeneca, Astellas, The Europe Hotel and many others. His success in this role was due to the development of innovative solutions for his clients including large ground mounted and roof mounted solar PV installations.

John is looking forward to bringing his experience and unique perspective on distributed generation to Ortus to help build on the current success of the business. This will include developing private wire arrangements to utilise otherwise wasted land banks and developing multisite frameworks. This will help clients to optimise existing unutilised space to reduce utility expenditure while hitting sustainability targets.
