The renewable energy market in Ireland has experienced significant growth and evolution in recent years, driven by ambitious government targets, technological advancements, and increasing environmental awareness. Ireland has abundant renewable energy resources, particularly wind and ocean energy, making it well- positioned to capitalize on clean energy opportunities. Wind power has been a dominant force in Ireland's renewable energy landscape, with the country consistently ranking among the top performers in wind energy capacity per capita globally. The development of onshore and offshore wind farms has been pivotal in meeting renewable energy targets and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Recently, Ireland has been increasingly diversifying its renewable energy portfolio, with growing investments in solar photovoltaic (PV), biomass, and hydroelectricity projects. The implementation of supportive policies, incentives, and initiatives by the government has played a crucial role in fostering the growth of the renewable energy market, attracting investment, and spurring innovation in the sector.
As of January 2022, here are some key renewable energy statistics for Ireland:
There is a huge opportunity for solar in Ireland, and interest in the sector continues to grow driven by declining costs of solar technology and increasing awareness of the need for diverse renewable energy sources.
Photovoltaic (PV) power purchase agreements (PPAs) present a significant opportunity in Ireland’s renewable energy sector, leveraging the country’s increasing interest in solar energy and its commitment to transitioning towards a low-carbon economy. With improving technology and declining costs, solar PV projects have become increasingly competitive in the Irish energy market. PPAs offer an attractive avenue for investors and corporations to participate in the renewable energy transition while hedging against rising energy costs and demonstrating environmental stewardship.
As Ireland continues to expand its renewable energy capacity, PV PPAs are poised to play a significant role in driving further growth in solar energy adoption and contributing to Ireland’s renewable energy targets.
Andrew has over 25 years’ experience in real estate and specifically property
investment where he was involved in over £1 billion of sales & acquisitions as
Investment Partner in Lisney Belfast, under his guidance, Ortus Energy has aims to be emerged as a key player in the renewable energy market, focusing on innovative solutions for energy storage and grid optimisation.
Andrew co-founded Lightsource Renewable Energy Ltd (based in the UK) in 2010.
Then just a six person start up, Lightsource quickly grew over the next five years to become Europe’s leading solar developer and operator and a world leader in pioneering solar projects. Lightsource now operates more than 1GW of solar projects and invested over AUS$3.5 billion. Andrew exited Lightsource in July 2015 following a successful sale to Octopus Investments in one of the largest global Solar Portfolio transactions to date.
Andrew brings a wealth of experience, and his leadership will be instrumental in
shaping Ortus Energy's mission to accelerate the transition to a clean energy future, making significant contributions to Ireland's renewable energy landscape and beyond.
Alistair is an experienced infrastructure developer who has spent 15 years
specialising in the renewable energy and low carbon sectors.
In 2018, Alistair created an innovative portal for managing GE Renewable’s aggressive global expansion of solar assets. Alistair has delivered over 300MW of solar assets over 3 continents.
Alistair holds a postgraduate qualification in Renewable Energy Enterprise and Management.
James founded Lightsource Renewable Energy Ltd (based in the UK) in 2010 and was Managing Director until March 2014.
Under the management of James, Lightsource grew to become Europe’s largest solar PV developer and operator, and a world leader in pioneering solar projects.
Lightsource now operates more than 1GW of solar projects and invested over AUS$3.5 billion.
James exited Lightsource in July 2015 following a successful sale to Octopus Investments in one of the largest global Solar Portfolio transactions to date.
James also holds board positions with Green Switch Australia, a utlity scale solar developer, AGES PLC (Africa Growth and Energy Solutions PLC, an African Renewable Energy business), Grabat Renewables Ltd, an energy storage business and Arilee Ltd, a private clean energy investment business.
John is an experienced renewable energy professional with 8 years experience in the Irish renewable energy market. John has worked in areas such as industrial biomass, wind and most recently working in solar PV.
Over the last 4 years John has worked with Enerpower helping them become one of Ireland and the UK’s largest solar PV providers. In his role as Senior Sales Manager UK and Ireland John worked with clients such as Sysco, Pfizer, Alexion Astrazeneca, Astellas, The Europe Hotel and many others. His success in this role was due to the development of innovative solutions for his clients including large ground mounted and roof mounted solar PV installations.
John is looking forward to bringing his experience and unique perspective on distributed generation to Ortus to help build on the current success of the business. This will include developing private wire arrangements to utilise otherwise wasted land banks and developing multisite frameworks. This will help clients to optimise existing unutilised space to reduce utility expenditure while hitting sustainability targets.

“The system upgrade has been conceived and integrated in such a way that all sources of energy, from fuel to grid supply, can be optimized for efficiency, carbon reduction and operating cost. It’s important for this advanced Marine Power Test Facility and the customers that rely on it, providing a full scale demonstration of future, greener maritime technologies and their deployment within a micro grid.”
Sales and Commercial Director at GE Power Conversion UK
It was a pleasure to work with Charles throughout our Energy Performance Programme. His professional and flexible approach coped well with the complexities of our work, he worked hard to understand our bespoke requirements and importantly delivered on budget and to the agreed deadline.
Charles helped us invest almost £5million in one of the UKs most deprived areas. The energy efficiency measures and heat networks are expected to save 40% of the buildings CO2 emissions and halve the heating bills for 1,500 tenants.
We look forward to working on many of the forthcoming projects in Ortus' impressive pipeline."
